It is only God, God alone who causes the earth to produce. The increase of the earth comes from the good hands of our loving, giving Heavenly Father. This summer (2011) we have experienced many extra hot days - weather from mid 90s to 100 degrees. Add the humidity index to that and the number increases. Just when it seems unbearable, with crackling grass underfoot and wilting plants to the right and left, the storm clouds gather and there's a downpour. The results: everything is fresh and green. That cloud is evidence of God's tender mercy, causing the dew and the rain to make our "earth yield her increase."
Looking at Psalm 67, we see how the blessings He gives affect so many areas of our lives! This very short Psalm has wonderful lessons for us to lean upon. Take a moment to read and meditate.
God be merciful unto us, and bless us
And cause His face to shine upon us;
That thy way may be known upon the earth,
Thy saving health among all nations.
Let the people praise thee, O God;
Let all the people praise thee.
O let the nations be glad and sing for joy:
For thou shalt judge the people righteously,
And govern the nations upon the earth.
Let the people praise the, O God;
Let all the people praise thee.
Then shall the earth yield her increase,
And God, even our own God, shall bless us

"I will give thee for a covenant of the people" Isaiah 49:8
Covenant: A binding and solemn agreement made by two or more individuals, parties. An agreement among members of a church to hold to points of doctrine, faith, practice. In theology, the promises made by God to man, as recorded in the Bible.
Ultimately, Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of God's covenant that he made with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. Our heavenly Father gave us a perfect Christ as the foremost expression of His love to worthless and fallen man. Jesus Christ through His spotless, sinless life redeemed us by His death on Calvary's cross.
God's promise was spoken as early as Genesis 3:15 "her seed shall bruise" the serpent who is seeking to destroy God's creation - man - Adam and Eve. His promise to overcome the worldly kingdom where Satan dwells is true. That happened when Jesus was given as the sacrificial lamb on the cross. Jesus kept the law perfectly, something man cannot do. Jesus, only Jesus, could be an acceptable gift to appease God's wrath and satisfy God's judgement. For this we can only be grateful for He keeps His covenant with His people.

"Thou shalt make thy prayer unto Him" Job 22:27
Have you ever been preoccupied with a concern for a friend, family member or a future occasion so much so that you find yourself committing it to prayer constantly during your day? Does it seem to become an obsession? Our lips and thoughts are directed upward to heaven with our request ... "Please Lord, in earnest, I implore You..." Possibly we state: "Dear God may I ask that You ..." If those words have ever come from your mouth, hundreds of times, you are not alone.
The amazing fact is "He shall hear thee" Job 22:27.
More often than not, we are in a state of uncertainty, anxiety when this happens. Yet, in the midst of our personal turmoil, God hears us. When we feel abandoned or cast down, God is there to hear our voice and send comfort. It may be that direction is given. "the light shall shine upon thy ways" Job 22:28. Or maybe God will fortify us, provide support "thou shalt be built up" vs 23.
We can most certainly identify with these verses in Job. "There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble" Job 22:29.

"The Earth be Moved, The Moutains be Carried, The Waters Roar "
Psalm 46 pronounces an incredibly strong declaration: "God is our Refuge and Strength, a very present Help in trouble." These comforting words are exactly what we can cling to amidst the crisis in an uncertain world. March 11 brought the strongest earthquake ever to hit Japan, 9.0. The triple devastation of the earthquake, the subsequent tsunami then the nuclear turmoil has been unprecedented for that tiny island country in the Pacific. In such a small amount of time comparatively, Japan experienced the trembling movement of the earth; mountains falling through mudslides leveling communities; and the rushing, waves roaring upon the coastline, pulling villages out to sea. Yet, God speaks "The Lord of hosts is with us" Psalm 46:7.
The Sovereign Lord has all power over the elements of Nature. He uses them as He will whether He chooses to move kingdoms to desolation or mend them. Although many would not acknowledge God as Lord over the wind and the waters, surely Psalm 46 declare it to be true. It is solely God's choice to bring judgement or healing to the nations of this earth.

The Cold of Snow and the Servant
As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, [so is] a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters. Proverbs 25:13
Proverbs 25:13 seems like an appropriate verse in the middle of winter. We Midwesterners don't think of snow as refreshing this time of year for its companions are freezing temperatures, heavy winds, sleet and slush, icy coatings all about! Yet, our Bible gives a different perspective. The analogy of the cold of snow to refreshing the soul is a good one and definitely deserves a bit more study. Those living in hotter locations, would so welcome an occasional cooling wind, chilling air and touch of snow, particularly if it should occur at harvest. It is simply refreshing to outdoor laborers after working through many days of heat, prevalent in sub tropical climates. Israel is on the Mediterranean and accustomed to the long, hot summers; warm, dry harvests; and shorter, rainy winters. It must be rare to have that light snowfall, totally unexpected; yet, this scene provides a picture of renewed energy.
A highlight of the verse would be to point us to a dependable messenger, not so much the weather. This faithful servant will carry the message -- fully trustworthy, completely reliable -- the master will have satisfaction that the information will come to its final destination. Could we be that messenger for our Lord and Savior. Could we carry the message of the sacrifice of Christ and His offering for our redemption from sin? Certainly that is an awesome responsibility: to live as though we carry the message and our lives show the work of Christ in that He gives us peace and hope for the future. May our Master say to us, "well done thou good and faithful servant" Matthew 25:23.

"Her Seed"
In the book of Beginnings - Genesis - we are given an account of the entire 7 Day Creation. Life is Revealed: Sea life, Plant life, Animal life culminating in Human Life. Very shortly after the miraculous description of Everything Good, we are given a frightening lesson on Man's Fall from a perfect fellowship with the Creator and the beauty of Eden's Garden. Yet, hidden in the despair of sin, God provided Eve with an amazing Promise: Redemption through God's Son would come from "the seed of the woman" Genesis 3:15.
Adam who enjoyed a pure communion with the Lord from his very creation felt alienation and fear after tasting of the forbidden fruit when God called for him: "I was afraid ... I hid myself" Gen 3:10. Then Eve, feeling the pain of blame and guilt responded that she was beguiled or deceived into her actions. We can all identify with these emotions of fear, shame, and the disappointment or anger stemming from betrayal. Yet, none of us have fallen from such a holy companionship with our Lord and King.
God set out his punishment clearly, quickly and without further reprimands. First the serpent was cursed to crawl on the belly, eat dust, feel enmity, be crushed. Then the Woman's punishment would be two fold: pain, sorrow in childbearing; and the desire to her husband who should be caring for her, not as the partner, as was the woman in Eden. Both of these are relational for her. She devotes much of her time to child rearing with hurt and tears being integral to the process. Her relationship with her husband is now cursed; there's the struggle to earnestly heed his direction. Adam's curse was applied to him personally as well as the human race. The garden now becomes a burden requiring toil, sweat with thorns and thistles. He is to get his sustenance from the cursed ground. Death would be a reality resulting from the fall - dust thou art and shall return.
Yet, it was the Woman who was given the message of Hope: her Seed would bruise the head of the deceiver. The promise that Eve would be the mother of all living, provided that HOPE for Victory. Through her offspring, a Savior would come to be the Deliverer from the beguiling serpent. This is how the darkness and the evil from sin would be overthrown. Notice the prophet Isaiah's statements in 14:12 when Lucifer is addressed as fallen, cut down to the ground, brought down. This very promise concealed in the curse was a treasure that she pondered in her heart: the serpent would be defeated most certainly by her Seed!
God's perfect plan was presented to us very early in the Scripture. The Hope of Christ is given to us in such a simple phrase as "her seed." Let us look forward to the future when Christ shall appear gloriously a second time as "the blessed Hope" Titus 2:13. As the book of Revelation concludes, let us join with its author who states: "Even so, come, Lord Jesus" (Revelation 22:20).

Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation

A Proclamation.
The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consiousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.
